Established in 1864, Gallaudet University is located in Washington, D.C. Under the motto “Ephphatha” or “Be Opened,” Gallaudet is the first school to be federally chartered and specifically designed to accommodate the education of the deaf and hard of hearing.
Taking its name from Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a champion for the advancement of deaf education, the University is officially bilingual, using both English and American Sign Language for instruction. The Gallaudet Bison compete at the NCAA Division III level, as a part of the North Eastern Athletic Conference, in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, soccer, and more.
