Independent Bookshops in Washington DC

The Capitol Region is teeming with history and information, from museums and monuments to historic universities, and yes, cute little bookstores.

Here are six independent bookshops found throughout Washington DC:


Books for America

1417 22nd Street NW, DC

A non-profit bookstore set in Dupont Circle, Books for America is a non-profit bookshop known throughout the DC region as the "Bookstore with a Purpose." Open daily since 2005, this used bookstore donates consigned books to schools and shelters.

Capitol Hill Books

657 C Street SE, DC

Open daily, this crowded but quaint bookshop is located on Capitol Hill, neighboring the Eastern Market. A member of the Washington Antiquarian Booksellers' Association, this used books store was opened in 1991 – and offers the impressive Mystery Room.

Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café

1517 Connecticut Avenue NW, DC

Another Dupont Circle bookstore, Kramerbooks was established in 1976, and features everything from coffee and food to music, special events, and of course, books. This independent bookseller is known for its picturesque outdoor seating at Afterwords Café – open 24 hours Fridays and Saturdays.

The Lantern

3241 P Street NW, DC

Found in DC’s Georgetown neighborhood, The Lantern was opened in 1977, and donates proceeds to the higher education of women. Also known as the Bryn Mawr Bookshop, this used bookstore is closed Mondays, and gives you your fifth book free.

Politics & Prose

5015 Connecticut Avenue NW, DC

This being DC, you’ll need to browse Politics & Prose – where you’ll not only find an expansive political section, but author events, classes, music, and coffee. This DC bookstore and coffeehouse is open daily, and located on Connecticut Avenue.

Second Story Books

2000 P Street NW, DC

Check out the Rare Book Room at Second Story Books – a 1974 independent bookstore set in Dupont Circle (with a second location in Rockville). Specializing in out-of-print and unique used books, Second Story is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
