Visiting Washington DC & the Capital Region

All the hot air in Washington, D.C. doesn’t do much for winter’s outdoor temperatures. This is the season to discover the indoor treasures of the Nation's Capital. Home of 17 Smithsonian Museums to explore, a list of priorities comes in handy. The National Air and Space Museum is always popular along with iconic displays like the Hope Diamond, and the inaugural gowns of Presidential Wives.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is always a hit with kids of all ages as millions of dollars roll off the presses. A performance at the Kennedy Center is a must for theater enthusiasts – arrive early for a pre-performance snack in Roof Terrace Restaurant Bar or the KC Café. Honor the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy with a visit to the National Portrait Gallery for a look at the de Kooning portrait, one of the most unique of the collection.

The Smithsonian National Zoological Park is magic during the holidays. The National Zoo hosts Zoo Lights through January 1st featuring over 500,000 twinkling lights and holiday display throughout the grounds. Admission is free and the baby pandas are growing up fast. Don’t forget the Zoo Tubing on Lion/Tiger Hill during the winter season.

Arrivals in Washington, D.C. via Union Station, be sure to take some time to admire the holiday decorations, including the holiday miniature train display inside. Those interested in a holiday tour of the White House plan ahead and submit a request through your member of Congress.

The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink is open for the winter season. Enjoy spectacular works of art as you skate on the open-air rink with music from a state-of-the-art sound system. The rink is located between the National Museum of Natural History and the National Gallery of Art at 7th Street NW and Constitution Avenue.
